Matryoshka doll styling is becoming increasingly popular for people looking to add something a little different to their home décor. Thankfully, my wife Marina has far better taste than me, and she added a Tinker, Soldier, Tailor, Spy doll to our living room, which looks surprisingly good. We like a minimalist look with as little clutter as possible, and stackable dolls are perfect for this. They do not require much space, and there are numerous genres and designs to choose from. Typically, the tallest doll is around 6 inches high, with four dolls nested inside, although there can be more or fewer. The dolls can be kept inside the largest doll or displayed individually to showcase every design.

Authentic Russian dolls are produced in the Upper Volga region, around 60 miles north of Moscow and St Petersburg. They are handcrafted from linden wood, chosen for its durability and ease of carving. The design is digitally printed onto a micro-thin film, which artists carefully apply to the sanded wood before blending the edges by hand. Several coats of non-toxic gloss lacquer are then added to create a beautiful finish. Finally, a stamp is applied to the base of the tallest doll as proof of authenticity.

Nowadays, the market is awash with cheap imitations from China, often made from low-quality wood, MDF, or plastic. They may look acceptable and serve a purpose for a time. Good matryoshka doll styling starts with choosing a location where the dolls can be clearly seen and appreciated. Always give them space so there are not too many distractions nearby. We display ours on a bookshelf, but they can look equally impressive on a mantelpiece or in a display cabinet. They should be kept in a bright room but away from direct sunlight, which can cause the colors to fade over time. It is also a good idea to create a focal point by placing the largest doll in the center and arranging the smaller dolls around it. For anyone looking for a decorative item that is both creative and unique, stackable dolls are an excellent choice.
