Hand Painted Russian Dolls: Why do they make great gifts
We live in a disposable society with increasingly short attention spans. I loved spending Christmas with my nephews and nieces when they were kids, but it was a little disconcerting when they opened their presents. Not surprisingly, it was like a feeding frenzy, with one present quickly followed by another. And once all the presents were opened, there was just a mass of things and wrapping paper. I don’t blame kids for being kids — I was the same myself. However, when I observed my nephews and nieces, I made an interesting observation. Often, it was the simplest toys or a set of pens and paper that captured their attention. Hand Painted Russian Dolls fascinate kids when they open a doll to reveal a smaller doll inside. And because they’re made to last, they often become valuable keepsakes associated with happy family occasions.
How are Russian Stackable Dolls Made
Our dolls are made in the Upper Volga region of Russia near Moscow. We use Linden wood because of its durable, easy‑to‑carve qualities. Linden wood is unique because it is extremely hard‑wearing, yet also very easy to carve, which is unusual for a hardwood. The wood is cut into small blocks and seasoned for 24 months in a dry environment to make sure it is completely dry. Seasoning is essential because wood can splinter or twist when it isn’t prepared properly. The dolls are then crafted by skilled artisans on a lathe and fine‑sanded to produce a very smooth finish. We then apply a thin printed transfer for the main artwork, before finishing the outlines, shading, and highlights by hand. Finally, several coats of non‑toxic lacquer are applied to produce a high‑quality finish, and the base of the largest doll is stamped to ensure authenticity.
