Wooden Russian Dolls; Who invented them, when were they first made, how are they made, who are they for, and much more besides. These iconic dolls were first created in 1890 by a Russian craftsman named Vasily Zvyozdochkin (1876-1956). They are known by several names but are perhaps best known as Matryoshka Dolls, or a Russian doll in a doll in searches.  These ingenious toys typically consist of 4-6 pieces that fit inside one another, and they are an integral part of Russian culture. 

What type of wood is used to make Wooden Russian Dolls?

Wooden Russian Dolls are made from linden wood and then crafted by skilled artisans. Linden wood is native to Europe and large parts of Russian. This hardwood is light brown in color with a straight grain, making it ideal for carving. Once the tree is felled, the wood is cut into blocks and then seasoned for a minimum of 12 months, before being used. Making the dolls is a skilled process which involves hallowing out the inside of the doll and ensuring that the walls are uniform. They are then sanded down to create a smooth surface, suitable for painting. Each doll is hand painted and then covered in a non-toxic water-based lacquer to protect them and enhance their appearance. And finally, the largest doll is stamped by the workshop or artist, as proof of authenticity.

Wooden Russian dolls are available in a vast array of designs, colors and themes, ranging from traditional Russian peasants, Moscow Ballet, famous Americans, animals, birds, and dinosaurs. They are very popular with kids because they are fascinated by each Russian doll in a doll. They are also very popular with collectors, because they are aesthetically pleasing, easy to store, and relatively inexpensive when compared to many hobbies.

How long do Matryoshka Dolls last?

These authentic matryoshka dolls are durable and will last for generations if looked after properly. When my wife was a little girl, her granny gave her a 6-piece doll as a present. My wife spent a lot of time with her Granny, and she profoundly influenced her life. She was a very wise lady who lived for her family and always set a good example. Sadly, her Granny has now passed away, but the doll is kept in a prominent position in a display cabinet, where it can be easily seen. Therefore, that doll, is much more than just a doll to my wife. It symbolizes a happy childhood, and her wonderful Granny.
